Aren’t schools already communities?

Friday, January 21st, 2011

I am currently working on a reflection paper on defining community schools. This is the start of my understanding their concept and the content of this post will become a part of a larger reflection paper, but for now here are some thoughts:
Community schools approach education with a holistic perspective looking for what is best for the larger community. Support mechanism with in the community need to be established in order to uplift of its members. Essential services like health and educational support programs for both students and parents need to be addressed first before focus can be placed on abstract concepts covered in classrooms. The bulk of the community must be invested in the community school concept if it is going to survive. Participants also must commit to long term service as the benefits of community schools are not easily measured nor are they immediate in observance.
Care to add your thoughts? Please do.
